When did “doing the right thing” become code for working for free? I was baptized in the fires of customer service, with the first 5 years of my working life being spent in retail under a store manager that knew what it meant to chase sales. However, including that one, no job I’ve ever held has truly rewarded those who took exceptional care of customers or cared about the business. It’s almost like if you do it, they know you care. And if you care, then they know you’ll do it anyway, even if you’re not rewarded. Because they think you’re stupid. If you like to do the right thing, it’s hard not to do it. I just wish it didn’t mean working for free all the time...

Having worked in call centers in a number of different roles, I can tell you a vast majority of the time, it’s not about 100% customer service (although lip service is maintained for that ideal) but it’s the bare minimum service along with w/e you can sell for, while maintaining some arbitrary call center metric like calls per hour and average call time.

Even the person best at C/S will probably get fired if they come underneath those metrics, unless you have an extremely understanding boss.

Ninja edit: aside from specific call center metrics other C/S non center jobs also work out that way a lot. Labor metrics have a ways to go before they become more qualitative.

I work in retail. My dislike of people grows by the day.

Yay for dealerships! Why can’t they just pay us all salary already?

Because they can’t stomach the salary they’d have to pay us for all that we do.

Because most of the people who own dealerships are so far removed from doing anything like wage earning that they don’t see how their business is run as a reflection of themselves.

It wouldn’t be that hard to come up with one though! A consistent check with largely reduced stress, can you imagine how much better customer service would be and how many more cars you could sell because of that? How much lower turnover would be? Once you weed out the trash of course.

That has been my biggest rub the last few years and now I am burned out and bitter and want nothing to do here anymore.
